Colored pencil on Bristol board
A note about what’s going on: I have no idea what’s going on. There are some moments in here that I didn’t want to lose by addressing overall tonal completion. So, I’m going to let this one stand, and hopefully it’ll inform aspects of the portraits that follow.
These studies were an exercise in emulating some of the process that Mark Tennant uses when doing figurative drawing work (see the work here and read about his process here). I was also getting a bit tired of working so small.
All of these pieces were done with graphite and charcoal on 18”x24” sheets of 111 lb. Canson drawing paper. Each took somewhere between 2 and 3 hours.
These are some grisaille oil studies done over the last month. Each is approximately 6”x8”. I’m trying to teach myself to paint.
